Tacama, the oldest vineyard in South America, is located 300km south of Lima in the Ica valley in Peru. It is a fertile oasis surrounded by deserts resting at the feet of the Andes, perfect region for the cultivation of the vine. Originally owned by an Augustinian convent, the estate was bought by the present owners (now the fifth generation) in 1889. According to José del Pozo, a Chilean historian, "The grapes were brought to Mexico in 1520 and Peru in 1540 by Francisco de Carabantes, who created the vineyard of Tacama ". Eminent wine authorities in Bordeaux declared: "Tacama's efforts have been successful in obtaining wines of indisputable quality, creating a specific Peruvian type, comparable to the best wines of the main wine producing countries." For more than a century Tacama has successfully devoted himself to mastering one of the arts most appreciated by humanity, the art of elaborating wine.
